The 2021-2022 reform included Seminary Courses in the Curriculum. There are four (4) Seminar Courses. Two in the first (A') semester and two in the fourth (D') Semester. They cover the subjects of Introduction to Geosciences (Semester 1), Informatics (Semester 1) and Programming Language (Semester 4) and Writing Scientific Papers (Semester 4) and the needs of informing and educating students on concerning the Geological Sciences, the strengthening of the digital literacy of the students which will help in the successful attendance of courses and workshops and the familiarization of the students with the search and use of scientific bibliography, the writing of papers and technical reports and the techniques of presenting scientific results.
The Seminar courses receive 0.5 ECTS each, they are not taken into account for obtaining/grading the degree and will be included in the Diploma Supplement, as is done with the Internship (PA001, 8ECTS).
The Seminar is addressed to newly admitted students of the Department of Geology & Geoenvironment. Its purpose is to inform and train them in matters related to the necessary equipment and its correct use, the safety rules governing geological work and outdoor exercise, as well as the provision of First Aid in the event of an emergency or accident.
It takes place in the first week of their studies (before the start of classes). The duration of the seminar is approximately 14 hours and it takes place in the afternoon at A13, at times that will be announced when the classes start.
Attending the Seminar and submitting the requested medical examinations are mandatory in order for one to be able to ensure his participation in the (mandatory) field exercises (which take place in most courses of the curriculum), but also to prepare his thesis, which in the majority of cases involves field work.
Updates (dates, educational material, etc.) are made through e-Class and for this reason all students must register , just like for the other courses.
The Seminar Course aims at introducing and familiarizing students with modern IT tools that are deemed indispensable both during their studies and during their careers as students and professionals. It specifically focuses on the MATLAB® and Octave Computing Engines (in terms of concepts, usage, capabilities and programming elements) and the construction of Graphs and Maps with the open source GMT (Generic Mapping Tools) system.
It is emphasized that attending the Seminar is necessary for those students who will choose the course Y4201 during the 2nd Semester of their Studies.
Through the course, students will come into contact with several programming languages (Python, Python Script, Java Script, HTML, Markdown, etc.), applications (HUGO) and environments (ATOM) in order to specialize in geodata management in and out of GIS, in online GIS, as well as data visualization and website tools.
At the end of the seminar, students will be able to develop specialized tools/software that they can use in their academic, research and professional career.
The seminar course aims to acquaint the students with the scientific methodology, focusing on the search and use of scientific literature, the writing of papers and technical reports and the techniques of presenting scientific results.
Upon completion, students will be able to: search for and use correct bibliographic references, understand the principles of scientific ethics, compose the structure of a paper, write technical geological reports and geological reports, write scientifically correct texts , comprehensively developing the respective topic and taking into account the existing knowledge and to present the results of their work or study to a scientific or general public.
