By decision of the General Assembly of the Department, from the Acad. Year 2011-2012, the institution of the Academic Advisor for the newly entering students was established. The purpose of introducing the institution of the Academic Advisor (AA) is to improve the level of studies by offering responsible advisory work, and on a personal level, to undergraduate students. The consulting project concerns the general case of guidance in terms of the rate of course selection and attendance as well as specific issues that may arise.
The role of the academic advisor is assumed by faculty members of the Department regardless of rank and position. The AAs undertake the guidance of new students, as long as they have at least 4 years remaining in their term of office. The DPs will monitor the students they take over from the beginning to the end of their studies.
Under the responsibility of the Department's Secretariat, first-year students are informed of their allocation to APs and the status is communicated with the names of AAs, their e-mails and their office hours. The Secretariat of the Department is responsible for informing the AS about the list and the emails of the newly entering students that has been allocated to them.
At the beginning of each academic year, and in the month of October, a fixed meeting of the AAs with the first-year students - members of their group is proposed. This meeting, which is common and can be held either in person or by teleconference, has an informative nature regarding the institution of the AA and the support it can provide. Any remaining meetings of the students with the AS during the year are held at the initiative of the students whenever they feel they need support. The content of the discussions is confidential and the personal data of the student is protected by the AA.
The task of AAs is to advise, guide and support students in their study program as well as in personal problems related to their studies, as well as to indicate ways to achieve their individual goals at each level of their studies. The DPs advise and suggest, without their hints and suggestions being mandatory or binding. In addition, they help, support and guide students to form the best possible perception of their professional life and the perspectives and options they can have as graduates of the Department. Finally, they support the students in solving issues that create a delay in the completion of their studies (e.g. communicates and processes together with respective faculty members the provision of additional educational material, etc.).
