Faculty of Geology and Geoenvironment

School of Science Faculty of Geology and Geoenvironment

The Department of Geology and Geoenvironment covers the field of Geosciences and belongs to the Faculty of Science of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. It provides Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral Study Programs and counts more than 50 years of operation and social contribution, having at the same time remarkable activity in the fields of research and innovation.

The science of Geology is considered by many as a "new" science, despite the fact that the first geological or geological-type treatises were written in antiquity, mainly the works of Aristotle, Theophrastus, Strabo, Pliny, etc. Today as a distinct science, it consists of specializations of many individual branches, basic and applied research, such as Mineralogy, Petrology, Physical Geography, Paleontology, Stratigraphy, Climatology, Seismology, Tectonics, Geochemistry, Geophysics, Volcanology, Sedimentology, Hydrogeology, Geothermal, Soil-/Rock-Mechanics, Geological Oceanography, Environmental, and Planetary Geology.

The Geoscientist of the 21st century is called upon to deal with and manage issues related to the welfare of society as a whole and the economic development of each country in combination with the protection of the environment. As a scientist, he knows more about the wider Geo-Environment than anyone else and clearly understands that the Earth is a living planet, an atmosphere-biosphere-hydrosphere-lithosphere interaction system, where the living world coexists with the inorganic.
